Lauren D. Beck was born on July 20, 1986 to Ms. Anika Downs and Mr. Jody Beck. From her early years she was always a very happy and playful child and enjoyed being the center of attention amongst her family and friends. Her colorful and comedic personality made everyone smile that she came into contact with, and sent most into fits of laughter. Her love for life showed in everything she did. She accepted her illness from an early age, and never allowed it to interfere with enjoying her life. She was known in the community for her love of singing and music. Her favorite artists were TLC, Lauren Hill, Aahliyah, Monica and Brandy. At an early age she developed a skill for writing poetry to help with expressing her feelings. Her poems were always expressions of love for God and love for her family. At the time of death she was a senior at Annapolis High school and a Certified Nursing Assistant. Her dream was to become a Pediatric Nurse, in hopes of helping others with her condition. She passed away 1 month shy of receiving her High school Diploma, however her mother was able to walk across the stage and receive her diploma for her. This event marked a great accomplishment for Lauren, as those who knew her marveled at the constant pain she endured and the determination it took to get to school each day. She wanted to be known as Lauren Beck, the helper, the changer, the do-er and not just Lauren Beck with Sickle Cell Disease. Her dream of helping others still lives on, even after losing her personal battle with Sickle Cell Disease on April 25, 2004.
